Turkish Journal of Mathematics Education https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme
Turkish Journal of Mathematics Education (TUJME) is an international refereed (peer-reviewed) journal and published three issues per year (Spring, Fall, Winter) by TURKBILMAT Education Services. The Journal publishes educational researches in the field of mathematics education. The journal is devoted to action researcher mathematics teachers, teacher educators, researchers, computer education and mathematics teacher candidates, foundations and people who are interested in mathematics education.
en-US abaki@trabzon.edu.tr (Adnan Baki) mustafaguler@trabzon.edu.tr (Mustafa Güler) Sun, 06 Nov 2022 13:52:45 +0000 OJS 3.2.1.1 http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss 60 Investigation of Symbol Sense Behaviors of 12th Grade Students in the Problem Solving Process https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme/article/view/61
With this research, it is aimed to examine the symbol sense behaviors of 12th grade students while solving problems in depth. For this reason, the study was designed according to the case study model, one of the qualitative research designs. The study was conducted with three twelfth grade students in a public school in Gümüşhane. In the selection of these students, the advice of the mathematics teacher was taken into account first, and then, with an algebra test applied, the students were divided into three levels as weak, moderate and good according to their academic achievements in algebra. The data of the study were collected through clinical interviews, which were supported by the literature and conducted on six problems, each of which was prepared to measure different behaviors related to symbol sense. The qualitative data collected as a result of the interviews were analyzed using descriptive analysis technique within the conceptual framework of the research. As a result, while the student with a good level of achievement exhibited the expected symbol sense behaviors in all of the given problems, the students with a medium and weak level of achievement could not display the symbol sense behaviors at the desired level for each problem.
Tuğba Tat, Yaşar Akkan Copyright (c) 2022 Turkish Journal of Mathematics Education https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme/article/view/61 Tue, 30 Aug 2022 00:00:00 +0000 Tendency Content Analysis of Research in the Field of Numbers in Turkey https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme/article/view/60
Number sense is generally expressed as the ability to understand numbers such as develop useful strategies while performing operations, make instant predictions, discover number patterns and notice arithmetic errors. It is one of the important matters that have increased in importance and studied in our country in recent years. Therefore, this study aims to determine the trends in number sense studies by using thematic content analysis. This study conducted research on a total of 94 studies, 60 articles and 34 theses published in the national literature between 2010 and 2022. Studies were examined in terms of publication place, type, year, sample size, sample group, research method, data collection tool and analysis type, umber sense components that students showed high and low performance. According to the findings, it has been determined that studies on the concept of number sense have increased significantly in recent years, for instance more than half of the studies (52%) use quantitative data analysis types (t-test, correlation, ANOVA, etc.). In addition, the concept of number sense has a positive relationship with various variables (parental education level, gender, school type, etc.), but the number sense skills of teachers and teacher candidates are low. It has been suggested that there is a need for in-depth studies using the qualitative method to make sense of the perceptions for the development of number sense skills.
Ercan Atasoy, Semra Karakoç Copyright (c) 2022 Turkish Journal of Mathematics Education https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme/article/view/60 Sun, 06 Nov 2022 00:00:00 +0000 Examining the Factors Affecting the Academic Achievement of Syrian Secondary School Students in Mathematics Lesson https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme/article/view/50
The aim of this study is to examine the factors affecting the academic success of Syrian secondary school students in mathematics by taking the opinions of teachers and students. The research was carried out with 6 mathematics teachers working in two state secondary schools in the city center of Isparta and 10 Syrian students studying at the same schools. In the study conducted on the basis of volunteerism, the participants were selected by convenient sampling method. In this study, case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The data were collected with a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher and analyzed with the content analysis method. As a result of the findings, the most mentioned factor among the factors affecting the academic success of Syrian students in mathematics is the adequacy of knowing Turkish by students. It is thought that the academic success in the mathematics course will increase with the improvement of the Turkish language of Syrian students and the meaningful teaching of mathematical concepts. It is recommended that additional studies be carried out for students with insufficient knowledge of Turkish and poor reading and writing skills, and that different methods and techniques and assessment tools should be used in mathematics lessons.
Büşra Karaca, Muhammet Demirbilek Copyright (c) 2022 Turkish Journal of Mathematics Education https://tujme.org/index.php/tujme/article/view/50 Sun, 06 Nov 2022 00:00:00 +0000
