This study investigated the moderating effect of students' interest in the nexus between AI usage in mathematics teaching and mathematics performance. Adopting a cross-sectional survey design, the study utilized a quantitative approach to gather and analyze data from a population of 542 students from two public senior high schools in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to selected 230 students. A structured questionnaire was used for the data collection. A structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized via Amos (v. 23). The result showed that AI usage significantly influenced students’ interest in mathematics performance and hurt mathematics performance. However, students’ interest positively predicted mathematics performance and significantly moderated the AI-performance nexus. The study emphasizes the need to foster students’ interest alongside technology innovation to optimize learning outcomes in mathematics education.
